PRAGUE GUIDE

The exhibition of selected sculptures, sketches and drawings of the great Czech symbolism (Art Nouveau) sculptor František Bílek (1872–1941) is installed in his modern family house, which was designed and built by him in 1911. In the garden, there is a statue of Jan Amos Komenský (Comenius), the work of F. Bílek. The building is the seat of the City Gallery of Prague. The interesting thing about Villa is that it combines the working, studio part with the living space and it is a unique collective work of Art Nouveau architecture.

Bílek is an artist of world-wide renown, his collective exhibitions have been admired by viewers for example in Sweden, Denmark and Belgium and the reaction is always one of astonishment. Bilek himself was admired by the French sculptor Antoine Bourdel, who praised the originality of Bilek’s work. He was able to recognise the quality of the work of the great mystic, whose statue of Christ adorns St. Vitus’.
