Overview of Cultural Events in Prague
- 11-19-2009
- Categorized in: Introduction
Prague is well known as being one of the cultural hubs of Europe, with a number of spectacular events happening there on a regular basis. Some of the most famed cultural institutions include the National Theatre and the Estates Theatre, as well as the Rudolfinum and the Municipal House, the latter of which is home to the Prague Symphony Orchestra. The Smetana Theatre also plays home to the Prague State Opera.
When it comes to museums, Prague is far from short on them! There are a huge number to visit, such as the National Museum, the Jewish Museum, the Alfons Mucha Museum and the Museum of Decorative Arts. This is just a miniscule selection of museums though – there are many, many more to choose from!
For entertainment, there are massive amounts of concert halls, cinemas and music venues in the city, meaning that there is something to suit everyone’s personal tastes. One of the biggest events in the cultural calendar is the Prague Spring International Music Festival, but there are also a number of other significant music festivals held here throughout the year as well. There are also a number of film festivals, but the largest of these is without doubt the Karlovy Vary Film Festival. Other festivals include the Prague Writers’ Festival, the Summer Shakespeare Festival and the vibrant World Roma Festival. For beer lovers, the Czech Beer Festival is also held for over two weeks every single May.
Prague has been well represented in films and many of the top actors and directors have been attracted to the Barrandov Studios in the city. Such films as Mission: Impossible Alien vs. Predator and Blade II have been filmed in the city, as well as Van Helsing and the Chronicles of Narnia. Various music videos, such as “Diamonds from Sierra Leone” by Kanye West, have also been filmed in the city and show a number of the different landmarks.
