Temperatures and weather conditions in Prague
Prague has a continental climate with hot summers and cold winters. The weather here is affected by weather patterns from both the east (Siberia) and the west (the Atlantic). Probably the best time to visit Prague is around May and September when the weather is not too hot or too cold and the city is not overcrowded. It is not unusual during the summer for temperatures to eventually reach as high as 35°C (95°F) and in the winter it can be as cold as -15°C (5°F). The average high temperature from May to September is 22°C (72°F) and the average low is 12°C (54°F), with an average of 7 hours of sunshine. Spring and summer are likely to be the sunniest months while the period between May and August is the rainiest and sudden storms and showers are common; therefore don’t forget your umbrella. Snow is rare in Prague during winter. Rainfall is fairly regular throughout the year, with just a tad more in spring and autumn and the very occasional summer thunderstorm. If you’re planning to visit Prague in the peak summer season, be prepared for crowded restaurants, hotels and a city full of foreign tourists. But all seasons in Prague are beautiful, no matter what the weather is like. If you're coming from the UK, the weather is quite similar so it should not feel too different for you.

Winter especially December
The disadvantage is that weather can be very cold. This is the time to visit markets and join the New Years' crowds celebrating in the streets, and it is a time for concert and opera lovers. Winter in Prague is very charming when snow covers all the historical buildings, and the Lesser Town looks like something from a fairy tale. However, you have to be lucky to see the city like this. Most tourist attractions have reduced opening hours, but are still open. Also keep in mind that it will get dark early - around 4:00 pm in December and January and around 5:00 pm in February. For winter you have to pack warm clothing and shoes which will protect you in the freezing days when temperatures can go below 0°C (and some days can go as low as -25°C).

Spring
This is a great season if you wish avoid the oppressive heat of summer and see the wonderful blossoms on the fruit trees of Petřín Hill, wander in the royal palace gardens or visit the leafy grounds of Vysehrad. There are not so many tourists around so you don’t have to worry about crowds on the Charles Bridge, and hotel prices are more reasonable etc.
The beginning of spring might be a bit chilly but from mid- April and May temperatures get higher (ranging from 16 to 25°C).

Summer
This is from June to the middle of September. The summer season is normally mild (from 20-27°C) and rather humid, and the highest temperatures reach about 30-35°C for short periods, generally in July and August. This is the high season when most travellers head to the city, therefore don’t think you will be alone. Days are long, warm and the tourist attractions are open until late. It is lovely to stay out late in the open air, maybe having dinner or drinking in a Prague beer garden. Nevertheless, it is advisable to bring along an umbrella as rainy days are quite common in the summer.

Autumn
This is lovely time to visit when the days are still bright with sunshine. At this time Prague becomes a fairy tale town as beautifully coloured trees with their changing colours often offer spectacular views. The streets are also much less crowded and thus make the autumn a really nice time to visit. Usually from the beginning of December (sometimes even November) snow is bound to fall and temperatures can be around 0°C.

January to March and November
These are the months to go if you want to avoid tourist crowds and pay low season rates for accommodation (hotel prices are half of what you would pay in peak season).
Tip: It is pleasant to visit Prague in November as it is not yet very cold.
Clothes & Packing
The weather in Prague can be changeable during the spring and summer, so it is worth bringing some warmer clothing and a waterproof jacket as well. But even if you forget your raincoat and the weather turns to rain, there's always a good café around the next corner. When visiting Prague during the autumn or winter months, bring a good selection of warmer clothes. Read more.
- Taking a mini umbrella is a good idea!
- Take comfortable shoes as you will do a lot of walking, and since many streets are cobbled it can be tough on your tootsies.
Asthma warning:
During hot spells, the air quality in Prague can deteriorate rapidly because of pollution, causing problems for those who suffer with respiratory problems. If you suffer from asthma you should carry an inhaler at all times.
