Ada Restaurant

The boutique spa hotel Hoffmeister hosts this French-International restaurant with a separate "wellness" menu. Less healthy portions include such things as leg of lamb stewed for nine hours. Chef Clement Martial earned "young chef of the year" honours way back in 1986 and still shows fine style.

La Provence temporarily closed 

Country French with a real French accent-or as close to it as possible in Central Europe. The slick brasserie in the alleys of Old Town schedules tastings of French wines, top notch French cheeses and other special events. They have a daily lunch menu, too. But most of all, La Provence is comfortable and quite good.

Céleste

Perched atop the Dancing House and known for an unparalleled view of Prague Castle, Céleste serves dishes respectable enough to distract you from the scenery. Also has great rooftop terrace.

Les Moules

Who says you have to visit Brussels or Brugge fora bowl of shellfish? No need to head to the Ardennes for a big old mug of Duvel, either. Mussels prepared in several styles and lineups of great Belgian ales are highlights. Large windows and a great location make for prime people watching, too.

Suterén

A French and French-inspired menu with some nods to international flavors defines this cellar location along the Vltava River. Trendy interior design seems like a counterpoint to food presentation. The kitchen leans on tried and true recipes — not a bad thing —with a few adventurous turns. Some good desserts and an interesting wine list.

Universal

Here's to longevity and low prices. Universal serves OK French (make that "French-style") and Continental meals at something close to Czech prices, which makes it quite popular, especially with the lunchtime crowd. Large salads and side dishes. The Sunday buffet is a real value for bargain hunters.

U Závoje

It's almost like a neighbourhood street in Paris, all rolled into one convenient location. There's a wine shop, a cheese shop, a café and the restaurant. The menu is sophisticated French and changes seasonally.

Zlatá Praha

This place atop the hotel Intercontinental offers then just stunning views. Culinary creations extend beyond the Continent, often to include Canadian lobster and Argentine beef, and the menu changes frequently. Servers know their stuff and the stock of French wines is impressive. Sunday brunch (starts 11 a.m.) is a good investment.
