Old Town Square

So let's throw ourselves into discovering Prague - the Old Town Square (Staroměstské náměstí) is definitely a great place to start. You will find yourself in the middle of one of the most visited and historic squares in Prague. This square has been at Prague's centre since the 10th century and was its main marketplace until the beginning of the 20th century. The spacious 1.7 hectare Old Town Square has been the scene of great events, both glorious and tragic.

The Gothic tower with its Astronomical Clock is the main attraction. Watch the clock on each hour as Christ and his 12 apostles signal the hour as they emerge from the clock. The clock is meant to not only show the time but also the signs of the zodiac and seasons as well as the course of the sun. The ground floor of the clock tower displays temporary exhibitions; on the first floor is the Gothic Chapel and the top of the tower is great for views across the city and square.

Little Square

This small square is surrounded by neo-Renaissance and baroque facades, including the sgraffito-decorated Rott building.

House At the Minute

The house "At the Minute" in Prague's Old Town Square is a typical Prague Renaissance house, adorned with much sgraffiti. The famous writer Franz Kafka lived there with his parents at the end of the 19th century.

Around the Square

Do not miss exploring streets surrounding Old Town Square where almost every building throws up some highlight. House at the Two Golden Bears (Dům u Dvou Zlatých Medvědů), situated at the corner of Melantrichova and Kožná Street, is one of them.

Old Prague and Old Town Square

The square had always been a lively place; today it is a popular part of the town for both Czechs and visitors from abroad, and offers plenty of restaurants, pubs, shops, entertainment, galleries and museums.

Prague Old Town

Old Town (Staré Město) lies beyond the Charles Bridge then stretching down to the Old Town Square. For tourists it is definitely most interesting Prague Quarter. The southern part of Staré Město consists mainly of narrow streets and arcaded courtyards that conceal gabled houses, small shops, churches and taverns.
