Powder Tower
Powder Tower (Prašná věž/brána) - This tower was built at the end of the 15th century originally as a part of the castle's defences. Later, it was the workshop of a cannon and bell maker. Powder Gate was also part of the Royal Route - coronation processions began here before moving off towards St. Vitus Cathedral. During Rudolf II's reign (1576-1612) the tower became a laboratory for alchemists and was then used as a gunpowder (hence its name) store until 1754. The sculptural decoration was badly damaged by Prussian forces in 1757. The present neo-Gothic façade dates from 1876.
Today it is a museum of alchemy, bell- and cannon-forging and Renaissance life in Prague Castle.
Incredible views of the river and Prague Castle are your reward if you climb to the top of the Powder Tower. It is not too strenuous a climb.

This frequently repaired Gothic Gate reminds us of the time when the Royal Court Palace used to stand here and the gate formed an entrance into Old Town. Powder Tower is one of the 13 original fortified gates to Old Town and today stands isolated next to the Art Nouveau Municipal House (whose interior was partially designed by Alphons Mucha).
