The Benedictine Abbey at St. Margaret's
Likely one of the oldest inhabited areas of Prague is known as Brevnov Monastery (Břevnovský Klášter). This beautiful baroque complex, designed by Christoph and Karl Dientzenhofer, dates from 1708 to 1745. The monastery has now been returned to the convent of Benedictines after the Velvet Revolution in 1989. The remarkable St. Margaret's Church, built over a Romanesque crypt, has stunning oval ceiling frescoes by Johann Steinfels, depicting scenes from the legend of St. Adalbert, while the Theresian Hall has a magnificent painting of Blessed Günther by Kosmas Assam.

The second oldest monastery in Bohemia (the first of a male order) was founded by Prince Boleslav II and the second bishop of Bohemia, St. Adalbert, in 993. As was usual with the Benedictine order, it was built far from the centre of the future town, amid a thick forest.
