PRAGUE GUIDE

The so-called Mining Mountain gains its name from the discovery of large deposits of silver and copper ore in the 13th century, which turned Kutná Hora overnight into one of the boom towns of central Europe. Today it is just a small provincial town with just over 20,000 people. The town offers a relaxed atmosphere, a few hotels, restaurants and a tourist information centre. Most visitors come for just a one-day visit but it is quite a good idea to stay overnight as well. There are plenty of beautiful Gothic churches to see such as St. Barbara's Cathedral (1388 to 1565), one of the most beautiful Czech Gothic buildings, the Italian Court (Vlassky dvur) with its Royal Mint, where the famous Prague grosches were minted (which at that time represented the hard currency of central Europe), the Stone House, and St. James Church. Apart from the town's attractions you can also visit the Mining Museum in Hradek.

Getting there: organized excursion or by train (from Prague main station) or by bus (from Florenc station).
Recommended time at location: minimum of 2 hours up to 4 hours.
